Garden-Fresh Habits: How Meal Planning & Growing Our Own Food Changed the Game

Let’s talk about that Meal Planning project we started. You know the one. The big plan to get organized, eat healthier, save money, and reduce that daily stress of asking, “What’s for dinner?” Well… it’s still going, and honestly, it’s been such a game changer.

Now, let’s be real — we don’t use the meal plan as often as we probably should. Life happens. But even on the weeks we don’t stick to it religiously, just having it in place has made a huge difference. That frantic, last-minute stress of figuring out meals? It’s not looming over us like it used to. And when we do follow the plan, the days go smoother, the meals are better, and the whole household feels more in sync.

The Garden + Meal Plan Combo? A Summer Dream.

With the warmer weather, it’s been a lot easier to lean into fresh, lighter meals — especially with what we have growing right outside. Our little garden has started offering up its first small harvests, and let me tell you, that joy never gets old. Just this past week, we pulled some beets and sautéed them to go with hamburger steaks. Simple, earthy, and totally satisfying. Meals like that remind me why we started this journey in the first place.

And don’t even get me started on grilling season! We’ve been doing a lot of hot dogs, brats, burgers, and grilled chicken — the kind of meals that come together quickly and pair perfectly with a side of homegrown veggies. It’s easy, it’s fresh, and it’s way more budget-friendly than ordering takeout for the third time in a week.

Building Better Habits, One Bulk Buy at a Time

One thing I’ve really noticed is how meal planning has changed the way we shop. We’re more intentional now — picking up items in bulk that we know we’ll use for multiple meals. And when sales hit? Oh, we’re ready. Freezing, canning, dehydrating — it’s become second nature. It’s not just about stocking up anymore, it’s about preserving what we’ve got so we’re not constantly running to the store.

Speaking of preserving…

The Strawberry Lemonade Worth Waiting For

Back in May, we bought a big batch of strawberries. What did we do with them? Made the most amazing concentrated Strawberry Lemonade and canned it. Every jar makes about half a gallon of refreshment — and yes, we drink it in the biggest glasses we own. We get about four to six drinks out of a jar (depending on how hot the day is and how generous the pour 😂). It’s sweet, tart, and a perfect summer pick-me-up. And honestly, it’s so potent you could easily water it down a bit and still be refreshed.

Less Store Runs, More Sanity

I still have our meal planning template stuck right to the fridge, and it’s been a quiet little hero. Even when I don’t sit down to plan a full week, it’s right there, reminding me of go-to meals and ideas when I’m drawing a blank. And the “quick runs” to the store? They’re fewer and farther between now. I didn’t realize how much those little trips added up — in time, money, and mental energy. Cutting them down has been a huge win.

Still Going Strong

So yes — the meal planning project is still alive and well. It’s not perfect. We’re not perfect. But it’s working. It’s helped us build better habits, waste less, eat more intentionally, and truly enjoy the food we make. Paired with the joy of harvesting from our garden and experimenting with preserving what we grow, this whole system feels like it’s finally clicking into place. Here’s to more simple meals, fresh garden veggies, fewer last-minute grocery trips, and a summer full of home-cooked goodness. If you’ve been thinking about starting a meal plan or growing a few veggies of your own — take this as your sign. It’s so worth it.
